Don't Be a Fool, Know What You Are Eating

Post  QBcrusher on Thu May 02, 2013 7:32 am

As an American, trying to stick to a healthy diet is one of the hardest tasks you can take on. It can be rather expensive, and takes a lot of self control to stick to the diet. The ingredients in most of our foods are poisons, and poisons are addictive. I am putting this together to try to give you a guide to follow when it comes to shopping smart. Obviously, I cannot cover everything, but I can cover some of the basics, and then you can do your own research.

GMOs Outside the United States?

There are many states/cities/counties in different countries that have banned GMO crops from being grown. Some of those include, (but are not limited to): Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Hungary, France, Switzerland, and India.

Here is a video of a Kenyan Government Official announcing the ban of GMO crops in Kenya, for the food safety of their citizens

What Foods are commonly Genetically Modified?

Genrally, there are eight GM food crops: soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, and a little bit of zucchini and yellow squash

You may think "Hey, I don't need to eat those foods, I will just avoid them and everything will be okay". That is not necessarily the case. Yes, you can avoid those specific foods, but that will not help if the ingredients are being used in other food that you eat. Many foods use Corn Starch, and Soybean Oil.

These are foods you should be VERY CAREFUL when consuming. Before you eat it, find out its origin. If you are in an organic health store, chances are you are getting safe food. But if you are at a supermarket, or Walmart, exercise EXTREME caution. There is no way for a human to tell the difference between Genetically Modified food and Conventional/Organic food. However, there have been many reported cases of animals being able to tell the difference, and refusing GMO food. It may sound cruel (and might not be for you) but if you have a dog or some other kind of animal, try getting food that you know for certain is genetically modified, and see if they will eat it. If they will not and they normally like that food, you can try as a layer of protection for yourself. Tiny bits of genetically modifed food every once in awhile will not likely cause serious health risks in the animal, but I wouldn't advise you overdo it.

Fruit and PLU Codes

When choosing what fruit to eat, you should always look at labels. Yes, those little annoying stickers on the fruit actually serve a purpose, and a rather good one. Every piece of fruit you buy from the store should have a sticker with a PLU code on it. Fruit is generally not Genetically Modified in the United States, but you never know when it could sneak up on you as a result of the media keeping its mouth shut about certain bills passed. You should always check your fruit, just to make sure.

There are 3 different types of codes you will find, indicating weather the item is:

  • Conventionally Grown
  • Organically Grown or
  • Genetically Modified

For those of you who don't know, Conventionally Grown means pesticides were used on it. Organically Grown means it was grown all natural, which is the best you can buy, and Genetically Modified is basically genetically mutated food, which you should stay away from at all costs.

Each is represented by a different PLU Number.

The PLU for a Conventianally Grown banana is 4011

Notice the 4 digit number.

The PLU for an Organically Grown banana is 94011.

It is 5 digits, and the same as the conventional banana, but with a 9 in front

The PLU for a Genetically Modified banana is 84011.

Like Organic, it is the same as the conventional banana, but has an 8 in front.

Ingredients to Avoid

There are MANY ingredients that the FDA allows us to consume, that are proven to be bad for your health. I cannot provide you with a full list, because that would take forever, but I can give you some of the worst and most common ones.

  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

  • Aspartame

  • Sucralose

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS, Corn Syrup)

  • Agave Nectar

  • Food Coloring and Dyes. This includes ingredients such as Yellow 6, Red 10, or any other artificial dyes

  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)

  • Butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT)

  • Sodium Nitrite

  • Sodium Nitrate

Corporations to Avoid

There are an infinite amount of corporations that are engaged in chemical warfare against us through food, and it is very tough to know for sure which ones use GMO crops, and which ones don't because those companies fight tooth and nail to make sure we are blind to what we eat, BUT if we use our brains we can figure out which ones to avoid and which ones not to. This can be done by of course reading the labels, but for the companies that do not label, you can look into which ones have lobbied and supported no GMO labeling, and which ones do business with Monsanto. Instead of making you do all that research, I will provide you with a list of common companies that you should avoid. I must warn you, you are going to be left with very few options compared to what you had before reading this article. Like I said, maintaining a healthy diet is definitely not an easy task in our current situation.

Just as important, if not more important than your food safety is your water safety. Public tap water can simply not be trusted nowadays. There are many toxic metals that are present, which cause brain damage and disease. Sodium fluoride being added to water is a serious problem. It is linked to brain damage, lower IQs, and other health risks. You can buy natural spring water, or look into buying a good water filter. A good filter that will last will range you around 300 dollars. It is quite expensive, but the hospital bill you avoid would be a lot more, not to mention your loss of brain functioning.

You can check this website to see if your local area Fluoridates water. Even if you are on the safe list, you should still consider a water filter to get rid of all the rest of the junk.
